Ange Delerce and his 2003 Sailing Team managed to start the match racing season with a great performance at the first stop of the European Match Race Tour in Antibes earlier in February.
After an exciting performance, the young French skipper and his team won the first stop of the EMRT in Antibes.
EMRT interviewed the young skipper after the win.
Q: When and how did you get to the Match Race?
A: We started match racing only six months ago! It is a very big success for us to win the first stop of the European Match Race Tour here in Antibes. We faced some very strong teams, among them the 9th overall ranked team in the world, and we manage to come up on top! It was a fantastic result.
I am a medical student, and match racing allows me to continue sailing while continuing my studies. Match racing requires far less time than an Olympic campaign, but it requires a lot of concentration and hard training as a team. Moreover, I love the tension and the suspense that match racing can offer. I find it more exciting to watch than fleet race.
Q: Do you also sail on other boats? Are you only focused in match racing events or also in other disciplines?
A: Yes, as a team we practice a lot on the J-70 and the Sb20.
In December of 2022, we participated and managed to win the "Sb20 duty free regatta" in Dubai.
Currently, it is in our plans to do the Sb20 World Championship in Netherlands this summer. But, we plan to participate to some more match racing events this year.
Q: Are you planning to participate in other EMRT events in 2023?
A: Yes, our main goal is to manage to qualify for the EMRT Final, in Italy and we will try our best to do that. So we are planning to participate to some more EMRT events this year. Currently, we have in our plans the event in Sweden, that will be held in the end of April.
Q: How to have better match racing events and, specifically, EMRT events?
A: I know it is not an easy task for organisers, it is always a challenge to deliver good match racing events. Especially after the COVID situation which made thing harder. I think we must try to bring attractiveness among the best teams in the world. One way to do that is better communication on social networks or a prize money.
